Eco-friendly Surf Camps

How can surfers be more ocean and environmentally conscious?

Hi, hallo, hola et bonjour!

Living in a tent surrounded by a pine tree forest next to the ocean is the ultimate introduction to the surfing lifestyle and how important it is to be kind to the ocean and our surroundings. With this in mind, I wanted to highlight the seven eco saviours of the seas and how to avoid being an eco-kook.

1. RECYCLING

Recycling is key to sustainability, which is why everything from the cardboard used to carry fresh fruits and veg to the surf camp, to the wrappers of quality meats and cheese set out for lunch, to your empty wine bottles are all chucked in the appropriate separate bins. Plastic grocery bags don’t exist here and the sandwich bags that you’ll use to take your lunch to the beach in between surfs are also recyclable!

2. KEEPING THE BEACHES AND SURF CAMP CLEAN

Just like the surf camp is home to us, the ocean and the beach is home to thousands of creatures that we need to respect. With teamers working shifts every hour of the day, the surf camp is always left spotless, and weekly beach cleans are how we as a surf camp can give back to the the space around us. Beach cleans will not only leave you with a sense of satisfaction, but also with some pretty epic Star Surf Camps merchandise for the surf holiday guest with the biggest bag of beach garbage! (Ans btw, our merch is made from recycled bamboo. Double whammy)

3. SAVING ENERGY

There are simple but amazingly beneficial ways to save energy around the surf camp. Our tents are beautifully bright so we can take advantage of the natural Moliets sun throughout the long summer days. When the sun finally sets, our eco-friendly fairy lights light up the surf camp. When the time comes to hit up the bars in town, or if your glamping tent is calling, main camp lights are turned off at 11pm. Located so close to the ocean and the town means that we can walk absolutely everywhere, reducing our environmental footprint by increasing our actual footprints!

4. INFORMING SURF HOLIDAY GUESTS

Wandering around our surf camp, you’ll notice quotes and reminders to respect the ocean and the environment. Additionally, we emphasize environmental sustainability actions at the beginning of every surf holiday week during our welcome talk, where you’ll meet the whole team and get excited about the awesome few days to come.

5. ORGANIC MATERIALS AROUND THE SURF CAMP

The surf camp has been built up with locally sourced organic materials such as the bamboo yoga stage and the skate ramp made of recycled wood. In fact, most (if not all) of our furniture was made from scratch by our build up team’s carpenters. They are goooood!

6. PLASTIC

Plastic is not a friend to the ocean, as when mistaken for food, or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time, it can be detrimental to sea life. New water taps have been installed around the surf camp for easy access to refill water bottles and discourage plastic bottles. Surf camp guests are also encouraged to bring their own eating utensils so there are no plastic plates, cutlery, or cups in sight. Even our beer pong cups are reusable!

7. VEGGIE & VEGAN MEALS

The meals prepared by our Star Surf Camps chefs are always made from fresh, in-season ingredients which our veggie and vegan guests should especially look out for. For our meat eaters, we always try our best to locally source our meats!

After being soaked up in the Star Surf Camps lifestyle, you’ll soon adapt to the simplistic ways, and realize that all you need is a swimsuit and a surfboard to have a goooood time. Come along to one of our surf camps & help us keep our oceans clean!
