Christmas Surf Trip
Where to go surfing this winter?

When the trees and landscapes start to change colours, you know that Winter is slowly approaching. Don’t get us wrong, we love, love, LOVE the seasons, Autumn in particular with all its yellowes, oranges and reds. It’s just beautiful! However, it is now only the beginning of November. By the time another four weeks of chilly winds and rainy days have come and gone, we do generally get a little fed up with being cold and cannot wait to soak up some winter sun somewhere else on this beautiful planet.

Luckily, our favourite thing to do – surfing – is not just something for summer, but instead is a year-round holiday opportunity. If you are wanting to escape some of the winter cold and rain, we have some awesome winter surf holiday destinations for you for the winter of 2019/2020.

Planning your 2019/2020 surf adventure will probably be one of the most exciting tasks you do this year. We are here to lend you a helping hand when it comes to choosing a surf destination for your winter escape or sunny surfing get-away. Our most popular surf camp locations for the winter of 2019/2020 are the Canary Islands, with more than 300 days of sunshine each year, Morocco, the #1 winter surf destination for European surfers and, for everyone wanting to go further afield, Sri Lanka, with air and water temperatures of 28 degrees in December!

El Cotillo, Fuerteventura

Both our Surf House in Fuerteventura and our self-catering Surf Apartments on Fuerteventura are open all year round and a great place to get some sun between November and April. Our team lives onsite and we stay open over Christmas and New Year which means, this year, you could be seeing in the new year by surfing some epic waves with your friends and other like minded surfers from around the world.

Idyllic white sandy beaches and crystal clear water is what you can expect from Fuerteventura, Europe’s Hawaii. And better still, it doesn’t have to cost the earth! Our cheapest surf packages in our surf house here on Fuerteventura start from 249€ this winter which will leave you with more money for presents for loved ones (and/or maybe a summer surf trip. Success!).

I have spent quite a bit of time on Fuerteventura and just love the landscape. It’s hot and dry and the sceney is sometimes almost brutal, bare and deserted. What I also love is that you don’t need to “rip shred” if you know what I mean. I’m a pretty average surfer and there’s plenty of waves for me over the winter on a daily basis.

Tamraght, Morocco

Besides surfing on the Canary Islands this winter, we can highly recommend the surfing epicentre that is Morocco. Our partner surf camp here is located in Tamraght, a quiet, picturesque village between Banana Village and the popular surf town of Taghazout. The beach as well as many local shops and restaurants are in easy walking distance from our surf camp. The surf camp itself is a 300m² modern Moroccan-style villa that stretches over 3 floors with a large, panoramic rooftop terrace, perfect for practicing Yoga, enjoying sunset drinks and our afternoon high teas and for sharing surfing stories. Open all year round and with a mixture of private, twin and dorm rooms, our Surf Camp in Morocco is the perfect place for solo surf travelers and groups of friends.

From the surf camp, you are within walking distance of beach and point break waves. If you are an intermediate surfer who is looking to progress from beach breaks, you couldn’t ask for a better wave than Banana point! Our cheapest surf package in Morocco starts from only 245€/week!

Joe used to spent every winter in Morocco. When him, Sami and Pablo had finished the summer surf camp seasons in France and Spain, he would follow the sun and make his way down from Gibraltar to Agadir. That’s a 10 hour drive inland! If you hit up a few surf spots on the way, it’s easily a surf trip in itself. If you ever find yourself with some extra time on your hands, do it! Joe says you won’t regret it.

Ahangama, Sri Lanka

As the ultimate winter getaway this year, Sri Lanka has it all: hot summer days, warm evening, tropical climate, mild water temperatures, the list goes on. Our Surf Camp here on Sri Lanka is located in the island’s Southern Province and home to Sri Lanka’s most consistent waves and surf. Besides surfing and Yoga, our surf camp offers a swimming pool and sun loungers, perfect to soak up that much needed Vitamin D. And that’s not all. Join one of our surf camp language, art or Yoga workshops during your surf week with us or come along to a great day trip snorkeling along the island’s colorful reefs. Discover Sri Lanka’s wildlife in a safari park or explore the ancient temples and authentic markets in one of the local towns nearby. There’s plenty to see and do and we encourage all our surf holiday guests to immerse themselves in this beautiful culture and its lifestyle.

Sri Lanka is most certainly on my bucket list! I imagine it to be miles of white, sandy beaches lined with palm trees next to turquoise lagoons. Add a cocktail and, voila! I know that’s how I’d like to spend my winter this year. If you’re lucky enough to go there on a (surfing) holiday this year, do send us a postcard. We promise to be adequately jealous :)

As I finish writing this blog, the sun outside my little Plymouth home starts to go down. It’s only 4pm, but that’s November for you. I shall continue to dream of beach days and my next surf trip. If you’re lucky enough to be booking yours soon and would like some help, Justine is back in the office tomorrow and can help you with any surf holiday related queries.
