There are no two ways about it, it is cold. But for us surfers suiting up in a car park with the bitterly cold northerly winds, we might as well be in the Arctic, and that can only mean one thing…Winter surf holiday!! With major budget airlines competing to be the cheapest you can get some crazy deals to escape the cold and find some warm water.

Here at Star Surf Camps one of our most popular and bank account-friendly winter surf holidays is to Morocco, it offers waves for all surfing abilities, almost guaranteed good weather, great food at a really affordable cost. Flights can be found anywhere between £30-£100 return depending on your availability and how brave you are. (I personally like to leave it to the day before, this is not the cheapest way to do it but it’s the best way of guaranteeing a great surf forecast.)

Our partner surf camp in Morocco is located in Tamraght, a picturesque village situated between Taghazout and Banana Village, on Morocco’s Southwest coast just north of the city of Agadir. On arrival, you will be picked up from the airport and in around 40 minutes you will be at the coast, it really is as easy as that. From the surf camp, you are within walking distance of beach and point break waves. If you are an intermediate surfer who is looking to progress from beach breaks you couldn’t ask for a better wave than Banana point, it is easy to get in and out with access from the beach, so no sketchy rock jumps! It has a mellow takeoff and offers the opportunity to perform multiple turns and ride a wave like you may not have experienced before. The other waves close by are:

Devil’s rock …

A fun, easy-going beach break that turns into a good little wedge on West swells.

Crocs …

A nice little wedgy left-hander at high tide.

K17 …

Perfect, fun little right-hander reef/ point break.

Anchor Point …

For most surfers traveling to Morocco, the main goal is to catch a few waves at the world-famous Anchor point, in the right conditions you can easily get the longest ride of your life, but unfortunately, this is not one for beginners. With a slippery rock jump to get in, ferocious rip currents, and 4/5 surfers on every set wave it is not the easiest place to get waves. Try coming on a higher to avoid the wave-hungry locals, it will still be better than your local beach break back at home would be. If you can get there at sunset you will get an unforgettable view even if you are not surfing.

Killer Point …

From Anchors you are a stone’s throw away from no less than 6 other waves. Killer point can provide an equally long ride but the level is usually a bit lower so you may find it bit easier to catch waves there, and in between the two is my personal favourite mysteries. A mechanical wave with a hollow take-off and long racing walls. Each wave breaks like the one before over a shallow reef, allowing for barrels or fast hollow drops into 3 or 4 turns before kicking out with a short paddle back to the take-off spot.

You won’t want to miss the golden hour at Anchor Point! And for the most advanced surfers, you can carry on North and if you know where abouts to look you may find the best waves of your life.

But Morocco is not just a winter surf holiday destination for advanced surfers, it is also great for beginners and the surf lesson packages will give you everything you need to realize your dream of surfing. Included in your Surf Lesson Packages are 6 x 2hrs. of surf lessons as well as the use of all surf equipment (wetsuit, surfboard & leash). We divide our surf guests into groups in accordance with each surfer’s surfing ability. Our international team of professional surf instructors in Morocco doesn’t simply watch you from the beach, but gets in the water with you to help you catch the best waves and improve your surfing quickly. A theoretical introduction to the day’s surf spot, ocean safety, and a warm-up is also part of your surf lesson.

Seek and you may find an uncrowded wave like this!! It’s not all about surfing though; from your base in Tamraght it’s easy to explore the Moroccan culture, trips to Agadir or even the bustling city of Marrakech to experience the markets and souks are a must. There are also epic walks in paradise valley that should not be missed, and the food…. if you like to try something new, you will not be disappointed.

We really look forward to seeing you soon!
