Star Surf Camps Team’s Top Tips for Travelling Morocco

Star Surf Camps Team goes Morocco

If, like us, you’ve been using and abusing Skyscanner’s “search anywhere” feature during these long dark winter months, it will be no surprise to you that Morocco has been flaunting flights for as little as 30€ return. And, if like the majority of the Star Surf Camps crew, you’re already tempted by those endless right-hand point breaks, our first piece of advice is to pay the extra and bring your surfboard bag as quality rentals are a rarity and second-hand sales are non-existent. Come well-prepared with all the fins, leashes and wetsuits you’ll need as surf-related equipment is impossible to come by – we even heard rumours of a wax shortage this winter.

The true beauty of Morocco is the length and consistency of the waves and the variety of surf on our doorstep. The waves here are some of the longest in the world, most of which break over sand bottom point breaks. Just imagine a wave that lasts over 300 meters, allowing you to try 10+ turns on each wave, correct your body positioning and truly feel the difference between every board you choose to ride!

Should you want to explore further, the surf team will show you some of the many perfect waves up and down the Moroccan coastline. Within 30 minutes of our accommodation, there are over 35 waves from beginner surf spots to world-class waves suited for surfing professionals!

With passports at the ready, no visa required and PCR tests a distant memory, the Star Surf Camps crew of 2022 jumped at the chance to escape winter and found themselves beneath the clear blue skies of Morocco in a matter of hours. For those of you dreaming of guaranteed waves and cloudless days, we thought we’d get a little insight for you and asked the team

a] their favourite Moroccan spot to surf,
b] top traveller insights,
c] how they’d describe Morocco in 3 words.

Here’s what they had to say…

Waves around our Tamraght surf camp

Courtenay

a] Banana point is THE BEST. It’s got an easy drop and is generally really mellow. A great wave to get some training in before the step up to Anchor Point.

b] Don’t be put off by solo-female-traveler horror stories. Not once did I feel unsafe in 2 months; the Moroccan spirit and culture can only be described as welcoming, caring and respectful. The biggest threat is getting overcharged for Amlou – an irresistible almond nut butter made with argan oil and honey (served best with dates for an energizing pre-surf snack!).

c] Sixty second rides.

Lau

a] If you’re looking for a fun, easy-going beach break which turns into a good little wedge on West swells, then head to Devil’s Rock!

b] Different country, different rules. Moroccan culture is genuinely kind, safe and inviting but also extremely casual – being open-minded and ready to improvise a bit is for sure the best approach for your trip!

c] Surf and Amlou.

Max

a] K17. A perfect, fun little right hander point break. What more could you possible want!

b] Don’t bring a drone; it will get confiscated.

c] Interesting, mind-opening, detoxing.

Octave

a] I loved Crocs! An easy wedgy left hander at high tide that just keeps on giving.

b] Pack your walking shoes.

c] Go for it!

Tim

a] Anchor Point. Period. One of the world’s longest and most famous waves. The peak breaks in front of the rocks and can throw the occasional barrel, the middle section of the wave (500 metres) is a big open-faced wall allowing for multiple turns and, when the wave hits the inside, it starts to race and barrel, yeeehhhaaaaaa!

b] Buy a SIM card with data on arrival at the airport. And eat at least 1 tajine a day.

c] Raw (there is a very raw beauty to Morocco). Connected (there is a very welcoming and connected community as well as a strong connection to the ocean), Tajine (yum!).

Stav

a] Boilers because it reminds me of Manu Bay, Raglan, but in reverse.

b] Just go with it, don’t fight it. It’s Moroccan style and it will work out.

c] Only in Morocco!

Mykaela

a] A rare left-hander south of Tamri accessible by foot on low tide, but keep your eyes on the cliffs as the ocean rises or be prepared for a long paddle back to the main beach!

b] Take out cash when you can as very few places accept card payment. Bring a thicker wetsuit for the early morning sessions and some warmer clothes for those long evenings spent sharing food and stories with new friends under the stars.

c] Live, laugh, lentils.

Annika

a] Mysteries, Imsouane, where I wiped out so hard I vowed to never surf again… until I saw the epic photo!

b] Pack light. You’ll want to take a tajine pot home.

Healing, laughter, goats.

Juan

a] Imsouane – the waves and the landscape are amazing, so magical.

b] Don’t be scared to get into the culture of Morocco, the people treat you so good, I feel so grateful.

c] Reset, discover and crazy drivers.

Lily

a] Sunset surfs in the bay, watching the full moon rise above the mountain

b] Respect the locals, learn a few words in Darija and don’t book a return ticket until you’ve got here – you’re bound to stay longer than you originally planned (everyone does!)

c] Time doesn’t exist. A day can feel like a month, a month can go by in a second, a season can feel like a lifetime… This place doesn’t work on clock time, it’s something else!

Louis

a] Give me another couple of weeks on this good swell and I’ll be able to tell you my favourite spot!

b] Top tips would be to come in a van or to rent a car so you can go explore. Buy a blanket, it gets super cold at night! Bring tote bags and containers to be sustainable and reduce your waste as there isn’t much recycling and there is plastic everywhere.

c] Wild, welcoming, point-breaks!

With guaranteed waves, warm days, beautiful roads, burning sunsets, ocean-side camping spots, beachfront surf lodges, mind-blowing food and heart-warming people, Morocco couldn’t be a better winter escape for surfers. Whether a newbie frother or an expert shredder, there’s something for everyone.
