At our Moliets Surf Camp & Moliets Deluxe Camp, surfing and yoga aren’t the only activities on offer. We are cultural bunnies at heart and enjoy a trip to the Spanish city of San Sebastian every week. The Star Surf love affair with San Sebastián began right from day one when visiting the area, we fell head over heels and so have all our surf camp guests so far.

When asking our surf holiday guests about the highlight of their week’s surfing holiday, more often than not the answer will be ‘the trip to San Seb’. With this in mind we thought it deserves a little insight into what this fantastic trip entails.

Known as the jewel of the Basque country and a former Spanish naval port just 12 miles from France, it sits on the edge of a natural double harbour at the bottom of the Bay of Biscay and is divided by the mouth of a pulsating tidal river. The Basque folk call this little gem ‘Donostia,’ and being voted the culture capital of Europe in 2016, this place is bursting with personality and will be sure to leave an impression. 

So what will a Star Surf Camps trip to San Sebastián look like? After a morning of fun in the surf our team will round everyone up onto the coach for an exciting journey across the border into Spain. On arrival into San Seb our veteran surf camp staff will take you on tour that will delight the taste buds and you will spend a few hours learning all about pintxos from these gastronomic gurus. Pintxos are the Basque version of tapas and they are incredibly apt at the tapas game. For those into their gastronomy, San Sebastián has more Michelin stars per square mile than anywhere else in the world! You will also encounter the finest sangria in these quaint streets.

Some of our favourite foodie spot include Bordi Berri which is both rustic and charming.  The chefs here create modern Basque-style dishes, such as chorizo with cider and baked spider crab, as well as delicious homemade tapas of the day, scribbled on a chalkboard, where everything is made to order. Atari Gastroleku is another of our favourites; all the dishes here are meticulously presented, through contrasts of textures and flavours. A truly fantastic experience winding your way through the streets finding a contrast between wonderfully traditional, served by the owner style joints and modern, trendy bars with a unique twist on the ancient tradition.

After your palate has been truly blown away, we will invite everyone to collect their favourite tipple from the shop and wander up the hill for a (usually) incredible sunset overlooking the town. There is no feeling like watching the sun go down with a drink in hand, chatting to other legendary surf camp crew. A group photo and some selfies are a must at this picturesque spot and once the sun has said its farewells we will head down into the town and cruise around our favourite bars, dancing the night away.

At around 1am we all unwillingly make our way back to the bus where we swap stories of taste buds ticklers and crazy shapes on the dance floor. This San Sebastián trip is a great addition to any surf camp holiday in Moliets and a truly stand out experience not to be missed!
