Rucksack or suitcase?

How to choose the right bag for your next surf holiday adventure?

Packing, you either love it or hate it. But before you can even begin thinking of what to pack you need to decide on one essential: rucksack or suitcase? Both have their pros and cons, and depending on what travel arrangements you have made, one might be better than the other. If you have a straightforward, easy journey to your surf camp, it may not matter too much, however if you will be navigating through cities, stairs, airports and public transport, it may be worth hatching a plan.

As experienced travellers ourselves, we have experiences with both rucksack and suitcase surf travel, and we have put our thoughts below to help you make the right decision.

The Rucksack

The bag of choice for anyone on their gap year or going through long haul travel, the rucksack is awesome if you need to get a lot in 1 bag, but there are more pros than just space saving. One of the best things about having a rucksack is the hands free element, you can hold that passport and drink a coffee at the same time as carrying your things around with you, making yourself extra mobile.

Adding to this another positive of having a rucksack is the fact that you can carry two – one on your back and one on your front and you will still be hands free! Giving you more room for all the things you will need for your travels. It also means that getting on and off lifts and buses is smoother and easier.

On the flip side, rucksacks are usually just a thin canvas bag with multiple zips and clips and therefore the potential for breakage and damages are higher. It is no secret that airlines that are heavy handed with our luggage rucksacks are at higher risk of being victim to rips and tears. Another issue with the rucksack is the fact that you will no doubt have to take everything out to find the thing you are after, so if you do choose a rucksack, pack wisely and think about what you will need first.

The Suitcase

Solid and sturdy, one of the major pros of a suitcase. When taking a suitcase you know your items will be safe and if you choose a good brand the damage will usually be less than that of a rucksack. Suitcases are easy to wheel around and usually are a good care-free choice of luggage. You will not have a sore back and you don’t have to worry about constantly having to take something on and off your back constantly. Suitcases are easy to throw onto an airport luggage belt or in the back of a taxi or bus and know your items will be safe.

Suitcases do however still have their downsides, they are not easy if taking public transport or if you have to walk a fair distance as lugging them on and off buses, pavements etc can be tricky. Suitcases can be especially tricky for sandy surf camps; wheels and sand have never had a great relationship and, trust us, there is nothing worse than having to drag a heavy suitcase across sand/grass/ dirt tracks. Having said this, if you are only bringing a small hand luggage suitcase it may be ok as these are usually so much easier to pick up and carry.

I believe that the main focus of your luggage decision should be based on what kind of surf house or surf camp you are visiting. If you are planning on moving around alot, heading to surf campsites, trekking across beaches you should definitely go for a rucksack. If you are literally taking your luggage from your transfer and into your accommodation for the entire period then a suitcase is definitely the way to go.
