It’s been two whole weeks since we have opened our Surf Camp in Moliets for its 8th season, so we decided to get nostalgic and take a look at where some of the Star Surf Camp veterans ended up….
One of our oldest and dearest members of the Star Surf Camp team is Tim Borrow, surf photographer and all-round legend. Tim started his journey as Camp Photographer in our Surf Camp, Moliets, France. Anybody who has spent time in a surf camp will know just how much value a photographer can add to the surfing holiday experience. In fact, a “picture speaks a thousand words” has never rung truer than in a surf camp setting. From photographing the smile on a beginners’ first wave to cementing in time a radical manoeuvre, these moments in the ocean are incredibly special and having it captured through a lens on your surfing holiday is a blessing. Having spent a few years in our Surf Camp Moliets and then transitioning to our surfing holiday destination in Fuerteventura, Tim knows a thing or two about encapsulating a surfer’s energy and passion in the water.
Working at Star Surf has allowed Tim to pursue his talent and develop his interest alongside some epic waves. Since leaving our Star Surf Camps and moving away from the surfing holiday world, Tim has been working as a freelance photographer, carving a name for himself as a well known and respected surf photographer in the UK. We are incredibly proud and stoked to see Tim working his magic on a recent surf trip to Morocco, photographing World Champion Carissa Moore. Tim’s work can be found in UK and European surf magazines, such as Carve, on a regular basis and he has had the pleasure of working with some of the big names in the industry such as Red Bull, Hurley and Volcom.
We caught up with Tim recently to see how he was getting on:
SS: Really pleased to see your work cropping up all over the surf industry recently. So tell us, how did you get into photography in the first place?
TB: I got into photography at the age of 15 as a means of documenting my friends skateboarding and was instantly hooked. It was only when I was studying architecture at the university of Plymouth that I was introduced to the world of surfing. Since then I have found the ocean, surfing and the adventures they present to me to be where my true passions lie.
SS: Who is your biggest inspiration to date?
TB: In the early days of my surf photography I found a lot of inspiration in the works of UK photographers Mickey Smith and Ben Sekway. Both of these guys have a more artistic approach to surf photography and the ocean and I would say that definitely has an impact on the way I go about capturing images.
SS: Any stand out moments in your career so far? (Other than working at Star Surf Camps)
TB: Shooting at Mullaghmore in December on a 15-20ft swell with just a few guys paddling out was pretty epic, certainly the biggest waves I’ve shot. Also shooting with world champ Carissa Moore in January in Morocco was a highlight.
SS: Could you sum up Star Surf in three words?
TB: Freakishly, funky, fun.
