Fuerteventura is not just a paradise for surfing, but one for all sorts of adventures! I already told you about local festivals going on here all year round and, today, I’ll tell you about one of my favourite trips I did last week together with some of our lovely surf holiday guests from our surf house in El Cotillo!

Fuerteventura is full of surprises and hides plenty of special sites, you just need to know where to look for them. Although the Canary’s surf is arguable one of the most powerful magnets that draws surfers and those wanting to learn to surf to Fuerteventura, there are many other fun activities to do and plenty of stunning natural sights to see. One of these beautiful monuments is Calderón Hondo, an ancient volcano only a short drive from our surf house in El Cotillo. Just past the lovely village of Lajares, the imposing mountain offers some of the most mind-blowing views on Fuerteventura and her sister island, Lanzarote.

We’ve parked our car just outside of Lajares, in the direction of Majanicho where the footpath to walk up the mountain begins. The first decision we had to make was whether we wanted to walk a more direct, but steep route straight up to the peak or enjoy an easier walk around the volcano. As it was a beautiful day and we’d already been surfing in the morning, we decided on taking the scenic route and certainly didn’t regret it! Once up the volcano, we walked around the crater enjoying some amazing panoramic views! From the highest point of the hill, you can see all of Fuerteventura’s North! Being so far up on Calderón Hondo overlooking my little surfing paradise, I felt both big and small at the same time, a mixture of sensations that is really difficult to explain. Facing the north shore, we could spot at least 10 surf spots with Lanzarote in the background and saw the beautiful dunes of the east coast to our right and El Cotillo village with its fantastic lagoons on our left. There are also some binoculars that let you do a quick surf check of the North Track’s surf spots. If the visibility is clear enough, you can even see your friends enjoying a surf session in the waves of El Hierro or Majanicho :)

One advice: If you’re planning a picnic at the edge of the crater, be aware of the cheekiest of all Fuerteventura inhabitants: the chipmunk! If not, you might have to share your sandwich with them :)

For us, our Calderón Hondo trip was a perfect afternoon spent away from the surf house, discovering some of the island’s most stunning natural sights! …And a great excuse to treat ourselves to a well-deserved pint after the hike at one of the cozy surf bars in Lajares!

Fuerteventura steckt voller Überraschungen und verbirgt jede Menge toller Sehenswürdigkeiten – man muss nur wissen, wo man suchen soll. Obwohl das Surfen natürlich die größte Attraktion für Urlauber dieser Insel ist, gibt es noch viele weitere Aktivitäten für den Fall, dass man mal trocken bleiben möchte. Ob es also Mutter Erdes Entscheidung ist, dass der Tag nicht mit Surfen verbracht werden kann oder du einfach Lust auf etwas anderes hast – ich schlage vor, einen der unzähligen Vulkane Fuerteventuras zu besteigen!

Der Calderón Hondo befindet sich gleich hinter dem charmanten Dorf Lajares und lockt mit einer spektakulären Sicht über ganz Fuerteventura. Mit dem Auto gehts zunächst raus aus Lajares, auf der Straße Richtung Majanicho, wo der Pfad zum Aufstieg beginnt. Beim Aufstieg selbst kannst Du zwischen einem direkten, allerdings recht steilen oder einem etwas längeren, aber leichterem Weg wählen, je nachdem ob Du morgens schon zum Surfen im Wasser warst ;)

Oben angekommen kann man eine Runde um den Krater drehen, um den besten Platz für umwerfende Fotos zu finden. Am höchsten Punkt des Berges liegt einem buchstäblich der ganze Norden Fuerteventuras zu Füßen: der North Track mit weit über 30 verschiedenen Surfspots mit Lanzarote, der Nachbarinsel, im Hintergrund, die wunderschönen Dünen der Ostküste und das malerische Fischerdörfchen El Cotillo mit seinen blauen Lagunen im Westen. An diesem Ort fühlt man sich riesen groß und winzig klein zugleich – ein Gefühl, dass nur schwer zu beschreiben ist. Mit einem Fernglas kannst Du außerdem die Wellen des North Tracks checken oder, bei guter Sicht, Deinen Freunden dabei zusehen, wie sie die reef breaks von El Hierro und Majanicho unsicher machen.

Kleiner Insidertip: Wer außerdem ein kleines Picknick am Kraterrand geplant hat, sein Sandwich aber nicht teilen mag, sollte auf die frechsten Einwohner Fuerteventuras aufpassen – die Erdmännchen! ;)

Mein Highlight: Das wohlverdiente und erfrischende Bier zur Belohnung nach erfolgreichem Auf- und Abstieg in einer der gemütlich Surfbars in Lajares!
