“Fuerteventura?! You can’t do anything but lie on the beach there.” That’s a pretty common opinion on the beautiful Spanish island that is home to one of our Star Surf surf camps and surf schools. Why I personally think this opinion is wrong? Well, that’s because this sunny island has so much to offer! Besides beautiful beaches, gorgeous lagoons, fantastic surf for all levels, delicious local restaurants and more, there’s always some sort of festival going on that’s pretty unique. So, why it’s worth a holiday, I’m going to tell you now.

The small fishing village El Cotillo might seem all quiet and sleepy at a first glance, but then surprises its surf holiday guests and other holiday makers with its unique events all year round: whether you see millions of colourful kites in the sky, you hear live music in the air or find yourself in the middle of a wild water battle, there’s just always something going on! It’s great fun for everyone. And, whether you’re into surfing or not, you certainly get to dive into the Spanish culture with fiestas, sangrias and more! Let me introduce you the three most famous events in El Cotillo:

The first one is the “Festival de cometas”. This international kite festival takes place in El Cotillo and Corralejo every autumn since 1987. The typical trade winds that pass over the island in October and November are used to create a spectacular and colourful show up in the air. Around 250 kites of different sizes, colours and shapes can be observed when dancing with the wind. The designers of the kite also participate in a contest of two categories, technique and freestyle or artistic value.

Fuerte Música is probably the biggest music festival on Fuerteventura and it’s not only free, but literally on the doorstep of our surf apartments and our surf house on Fuerteventura, where our surf holiday guests get to experience this massive fiesta first-hand and right on the beach behind our Star Surf School. Here, among the “blue lagoons”, the sun loungers are replaced by big stages and countless camping tents. With artists such as the band Calle 13 from Puerto Rico, the festival rightly attracts people from all over the island and Europe’s mainland. If you’re planning a surf holiday to Fuerteventura in June or July, be sure to check the festival dates as it’s a spectacle not to be missed!

Last but not least is the “Fiesta del Agua” which is 100% Canarian! It’s a party celebrated all over town to honour the local patron saint, in Fuerteventura’s case, Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje. The whole village gets turned into a battle field for water bombs and fireworks. Highlight this year was also the massive water slide on the central plaza of El Cotillo.

Thanks to such a wide range of fiestas, fun, culture and more, you can be sure to not get bored after your surf lessons on Fuerteventura. Quite the contrary will more likely be the case when you’ll be faced with the difficult decision whether to go for an evening surf session or a night on the town. We believe that a healthy balance is the solution, haha! Surf in the morning, party in the evening during your surf camp holidays on Fuerteventura!

„Fuerteventura – nichts als Strand!“ Diese Meinung vertreten nur all zu Viele über das wunderschöne Zuhause unseres Star Surf Camps. Zu unrecht finden wir und erzählen euch heute, was die Insel außer paradisischer Strände und kristallklarem Wasser zu bieten hat.

Das kleine Fischerdörfchen El Cotillo, das auf den ersten Blick herrlich ruhig und verschlafen wirkt, überrascht mehrmals im Jahr mit einzigartigen Events, von bunten Drachen über Livemusik vom Feinsten bis hin zu wilden Wasserschlachten und -rutschen mitten im Dorf. Da sind nicht nur wir vom Star Surf Team, sondern auch unsere Surfhouse Gäste ganz aus dem Häuschen, wenn sie ihrem Surfurlaub noch eine Note Kultur und „fiesta“ hinzufügen können.

Das „Festival de cometas“, das „International Kite Festival“, findet seit 1987 jeden Herbst in El Cotillo und Corralejo statt. Hier werden die für diese Zeit typischen Passatwinde genutzt, um ein kunterbuntes Spektakel in die Luft zu zaubern. Bis zu 250 Drachen verschiedenster Größen und Formen können hier bestaunt werden. Die Teilnehmer treten im Wettbewerb in den zwei Katagorien „Technik und Freestyle“ und „künstlerische Vielfalt“ gegeneinander an. Wer da nicht vor Staunen in die Luft geht…

Das „Fuerte Música“ ist das wahrscheinlich größte Musikfestival der Insel, und dazu noch umsonst! Direkt vor der Haustür unserer Surfurlauber, am Strand bzw. den „Lagunen“ hinter der Star Surf Schule werden die Strandliegen gegen riesige Bühnen und jede Menge Zelte ausgetauscht und ein Wochenende lang durchgerockt. Mit Artisten wie z.B. Calle 13 kann sich dieses Event durchaus sehen lassen. Wer vorhat, seinen Surfkurs für Juni/ Juli zu buchen, sollte sich unbedingt im Voraus über genaue Daten schlau machen.

Mein perönlicher Favourit, das „Fiesta del agua“ ist typisch kanarisch – eines der Feste, das seit eh und je zu Ehren der Schutzpatronen organisiert wird, auf Fuerteventura ist das Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje, und bei dem das ganze Dorf in ein Schlachtfeld von Wasserbomben verwandelt wird. Absolutes Highlight in diesem Jahr: eine gewaltige Wasserrutsche direkt vom Dorfplatz ins Meer hinein.

Bei so tollem Angebot an Party, Spaß, Kultur und mehr muss man sich sicher keine Sorgen über Langeweile machen, auch wenn es mal keine Wellen gibt. Im Gegenteil, meistens fällt es unseren Gästen eher schwer zwischen durchtanzten Nächten und frühen Surfkursen zu entscheiden ;) Wir glauben an einen guten Ausgleich, schließlich darf in einem gelungenen Surfurlaub in Spanien auch eine ordentliche Portion fiesta nicht fehlen.
