Think “surf camp” and you probably think of “gap yah” types and wandering travellers souls looking to “find themselves”. Yet here at Star Surf, that’s only part of what are camps are about and at our Oyambre camp in particular you’re sure to find an unforgettable adventure for all the family…
If there’s one thing we hear more than anything else at our camps here at Star Surf it’s “I wish I’d learnt to surf earlier”. Our wonderful guests come and, more often than not, catch the surfing bug during their first lesson and it’s not uncommon for guests to extend their stays by an extra week or two so that they can really make the most of everything our camps have to offer… And our Oyambre camp is no exception.
Nestled in the foothills of Cantabria, conveniently close to the towns of Santander and Bilbao, our Spanish camp offers the same high-quality, fun surfing lessons, spacious glamping bell-tents and entertainment options as our other camps across Europe. But it also offers a little something extra. Away from the partying in Moliets and the peaceful vibes in Carcans in France, at our rural campsite here, you’ll find something for all the family.
“We try our best to cater for everyone and we’re definitely family friendly”, says camp manager Danya, “it’s really special how here, in the evenings, parents can unwind with a mojito at our bar while their kids run around and play in the field. We also have lots of solo travellers, so it’s rarely quiet, but we’ve found that most families love how the atmosphere is a mix of buzzy and relaxed. There’s always something to do and new people to meet”.
When it comes to things to do, the most obvious activity is the reason we’re all here: surfing. And with Oyambre’s conditions, you can get your family hooked on the sport as early as you want. “The waves and beach here are perfect for beginners”, says North Devon-born Parry, one of Oyambre’s resident surf coaches. “The waves are small and clean, and the rips and currents aren’t too strong either. New surfers can be standing up in no time!”
Yet surfing isn’t the only thing the camp has to offer. From skateboarding on the camp’s brand new longboards, to Stand Up Paddleboarding (or SUP-ing) when paddling for waves on a surfboard gets too much, there are a whole host of activities for families. With the towns of San Vicente de la Barquera and Comillas both under five kilometres away, guest can borrow bicycles from camp, brave the infamous hils of the region, and cycle wherever takes their fancy, chill in camp with a game of volleyball, badminton, or rounders, or enjoy the camp’s weekly movie night and cosy up with popcorn under the stars in our very own open air cinema.

But according to Parry, these are only some of the things that make Star Surf and Oyambre so special. “Surfing’s great for fitness but it’s also an amazing, huge community and Oyambre is the perfect example of that”, he says, “you can come here, pick up a sport you and your family will enjoy for life and, most importantly, make friends for life”.
“It’s sun, sea and fun guaranteed”, says Parry and, as a group get back from their morning lesson, buzzing from a pumping session, and a game of rounders gets underway with players of all ages, it’s hard to disagree… What more could you ask for from your own family surfing adventure?
We look forward to seeing you and your family in our Oyambre surf camp soon!
