On Friday July 11th Star Surf Camps along with several other surf camps from the area united for a huge beach clean up supported by the local municipality at Moliets Plage. Hundreds of beach goers armed with gloves and bin bags faced the huge task of cleaning the stretch of beach that had unfortunately collected vast amounts of rubbish.

There was a multi-national team working together, all with same incentive to create a clean beach for all of us to enjoy. The staff at Star Surf Camps are all keen surfers and avid beach bums so the cleanliness of the beaches means a great deal to us all. At Star Surf Camps, the beach is our office and we couldn’t be more grateful to have such a beautiful place to spend everyday ‘working’. Without that beach we wouldn’t be able to run our surf lessons and our camp wouldn’t exist so its fair to say that we rely upon both its beauty and surf to attract our guests and have them return every year.

Tilly, our newest surf instructor to join the surf team, from Australia, said that it was “a really refreshing start to the summer knowing that we’ve done something good for not only our work place but where we’ll be enjoying our whole summers, we should only be leaving our footprints in the sand.”

All the staff and guests were keen to get involved. “It was announced at dinner the night before and everyone was up for it, everyone wanted to get involved and do their bit to help.” Said Pieter, from Holland, who’s been staying with us for the past two weeks with his friend Tim. They said, “It was such a good idea and with all the camps working together the work was done so quickly, there were just so many people! After the clean up I then enjoyed my final surf at Moliets on a beautifully clean beach and it was my best surf yet!“ It was a great way for the guests to say thank you and farewell to the beach that they’ve been enjoying during their visit.

Everyone put 100% effort into the clean and got truly stuck in, rummaging through the sand and within just an hour the beach had drastically improved! Till, our entertainments man at Moliets said that “everybody from all over the camps got involved, amazing how much of a difference was made so quickly with everyone helping out.” and Kim, one of our surf instructors, said “I walked out from my lesson and saw the whole beach full of people collecting litter. I didn’t expect anywhere near as many people to be involved and was amazed at the effort everyone put in. I jumped straight in happy as can be still in my wetsuit!” Team work at its finest was demonstrated when a massive chain was created to carry the hundreds of bin bags from one side of the river to the other.

All sorts of debris were collected, including countless plastic bottles and lids, rope and a surprising number of lollipop sticks! Rob, surf assistant, said, “It was a great success especially when seeing just how much had been collected in the skip at the end.”
