Life as a Surf Instructor – Are Surf Instructors Really Living the Dream?

My Experience as a Surf Instructor in a Moliets Surf Camp

Hey there! My name is Michelle, I’m a 20 year old Swiss gal that just so happened to fall in love with surfing and everything that comes with it Star Surf Camps’ Moliets surf camp in Moliets-et-Maa two summers ago.

After graduating from college, two friends and I planned on doing a two-week surf trip to a surf camp – learning how to surf, meeting new people in the sunshine seemed like a good combination to pick. We didn’t really know what we were looking for as we’d never been to a surf camp before, and really just booked the first thing that popped up on the internet and looked fun. But just as destiny designed it, it turned out it was all meant to be. We booked Star Surf Camps in Moliets through Errant Surf, which turned out to be really easy and efficient.

Our two surfing holiday weeks turned out to be the best time of my life and, funny enough, helped shape who I am today; two years from then. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s so true!

Getting the chance to surf everyday and to see yourself progress with every wave you catch, surrounded by stoked surfers and the sea, was just magical. The entire surf camp team together with the whole surf camp vibe is just so full of positivity and good times! We met so many cool people from all over the world, some of which I call friends today or, even, my Moliets surf camp family. Well, to cut a long story short, I had such a great time, I ended up staying on for an additional surfing holiday week and never wanted to leave again!

So, having caught the “surfing bug” in Star Surf Camps’ Moliets surf camp, I decided to embark on a surf trip to South Africa to become a surf instructor. Fortunately, I passed all the exams, YEWW, and had an even better reason to return to Star Surf Camps! In the summer of 2017, I worked in their Moliets surf camp, first as a surf camp teamer and then as a surf assistant. I was a little apprehensive, thinking my second time in the surf camp wouldn’t be as good as the first. I guess you know the saying, “the first time is the best time”. Also, the fact that I was working in the surf camp, and not staying there for a surfing holiday, made me worry about missing out on lots of cool stuff, being too tired to do anything after work.

But, I have to say, working in a surf camp has many benefits! After a few days of getting to know all the other surf camp staff and trying to figure everyone, it became apparent very quickly that we’re all like-minded, good people and, after the first week, had already grown into one big international surf camp family which gave me a feeling of actually being at home in the beautiful pine forests of Moliets. The shifts as a surf camp teamer can be tough, but as you’re never working alone, there’s always something to chat or laugh about!

I loved working as a surf assistant during my time in the surf camp in Moliets. Being on the beach all day, doing the warm-ups with surf holiday guests, motivating beginner surfers and helping the surf instructors with their surf lessons was just incredibly rewarding! A surf camp day can get quite tiring as you’re always moving and the sun can really exhaust you, but seeing first-time surfers having a blast in the waves, learning a completely new skill and just being by the sea, is such a calming, fulfilling feeling I wouldn’t want to miss for anything in the world!

So, somehow, my second time in the Moliets surf camp turned out to be an unforgettable surfing summer AGAIN, with more waves surfed, more baguettes and beers in my belly and new and old surfer friends that made the whole experience so wonderful.

In conclusion:

Guys, if you want to have an amazing time this summer, be by the seaside, learn to surf and meet the most wonderful and best people, Star Surf Camps is the way to go! I myself can’t wait to spend another surfing summer in the romantic pine forest of Moliets, and I hope you’ll be part of it!

See you there, kisses from freezing Switzerland
