5 Top Tips for Your First Ever Surf Lesson

A dream come true! You’re on your way, surf holidays booked and you’re ready to go. You’ve never surfed before? Well, you’re in excellent company. Only a small portion of surf holiday makers have actual surf experience. In fact, we’d go as far as saying that 80% of our surf holiday guests are new to surfing.

Which is great! Surfing as a sport is becoming more and more popular, and also more and more accessible for people from all over the world. You haven’t got to live close to the sea to learn to surf. Far from it. With budget airlines connecting us all over Europe, we could surf in France or Spain or anywhere really tomorrow – or the day after depending on the air travel time obviously!

We love sharing our passion for surfing and for the surfing lifestyle.  holiday We have a few tips to help you have the best time on the water…

1. Take a moment to enjoy your surroundings

Surfing, what is it to you?  For us here at Star Surf Camps it’s about being out on the water, enjoying the environment, the sunshine, the waves…  Don’t focus too much on your surfing holiday goals, just take a moment when you are out on the water to look around and soak up the rays and waves!

2. It doesn’t matter what you look like

Literally that! On your surfing holiday you will fall off your surfboard countless amounts of times, have mascara running down your face, some very unattractive stuff coming from your nose… As much as we would like it to be, it’s not all bikini clad, perfect take-offs every time, not a pretty sport to learn…

All the pros make it look easy! But they don’t always get it right and have some gnarly wipeouts too! So get comfortable with making a fool of yourself in front of complete strangers, it’s all part of the fun!

3. Visualise

I thought this was a really weird tip that a surf instructor once gave me on my first surfing holiday, but it totally works!  If you are struggling to stand up or balance on the surfboard, then spend a moment in the water visualising yourself doing it. Your mind will prepare the body with the feeling of popping up or whatever you are trying to achieve and it will help you to do it….  Also the action of taking a moment to breathe will help you to relax and nail it!

4. Let go of the ego

No one gets the pop up right on the first try…. Thinking you are a pro and the best before getting in the water will just make nature want to show you who’s the real boss (and put you on your ass!).  So let go of the ego, go along with the flow, let the waves carry and help you rather than starting a losing battle!

5. Have fun & remember to smile!

We know you’ll love it, we all do! And can’t wait to share you
