5 Surfboards that are perfect for Fuerteventura this winter

Know which surfboard to choose

If you guys are anything like us, summer will feel like a long-lost dream, but don’t worry. Winter is not all bad, and what better excuse is there for a surf holiday than to escape the cold?!

Fuerteventura is an island paradise. With good surf all year round, waves suited to all surfing levels, volcanoes that grow out of the ocean and a culturally rich and diverse population, the island in the Atlantic Ocean is often referred to as Europe’s Hawaii. And with Fuerteventura having the sunniest and warmest climate in all of Europe, you can expect summery temperatures in- and outside the water all year round.

A surf holiday on Fuerteventura is everything you could want and more, consistently great weather, warm water, good food and most importantly an amazing array of waves. From beach breaks to reefs and points, a surfing holiday in Fuerteventura can cater to all levels of surfers from beginner to professional and everything in between. We have chosen the El Cotillo area as a base for our surf house because it offers easy access to the famous North Track with 30+ surf spots and 270 degrees of surfable coastline, beautiful lagoons, some of the island’s best restaurants and spectacular rural views. We’re sure you’ll love it here too. So here’s to an amazing and unforgettable surfing holiday experience from us to you!

Having the right surfboard for your ability and the conditions can make or break your hard-earned surf holiday. So that’s why we have spoken to our good friends at Mango’ Surf Shop who have recommended 5 types of surfboards to maximise your surf time.

No 1. The Foamie:

For anyone that is new to surfing you just can’t beat a softtop board, they have all the qualities you need in your first surfboard: glide, speed, volume for easy take-offs and easy surfing, plus a soft comfortable construction to keep you and others safe.

The Vision Ignite Softboard Foamie comes in a 6’2, 7’0, 8’0 or 9’0, and is the perfect first board to learn on during your winter surf holidays.

No 2. The Mid Length:

The next logical step after a soft-top board foamie is a mid-length, be that a mini Mal, egg, magic carpet or any other similar board.

The key to this board is to keep the volume high so it still feels familiar to the soft board you have used. Paddling should still be easy and it will be just as stable with habit and more maneuverability. Our main tip is don’t go too small, too soon. It will only stall your progression.

No 3. The Log:

Once you have put in some good time on your mid-length you will have the decision to make and this is determined by your own individual style and what you want to achieve from your surfing in the future.

If you have a laid-back cruisey style, or you just want to catch as many waves as possible every time you surf then a longboard could be the one for you. These come in many different shapes and styles just like shorter surfboards. So if it’s trimming down the point at Lobos or taking on a reef in Cotillo, there is a longboard that will do the job perfectly.

No 4. The Hybrid Shortboard aka. Fish:

If after your mid-length you decide you want to surf like the guys on the WSL then you need to start to lose some length. This is a process that can take a long time, because as before going to short to soon will only be detrimental.

A lot of people like to go to a “fish” style board as their first step down and this is a great idea. They keep the volume throughout the board but still have the wider template for stability and paddle power, but with a pulled-in tail, maneuvers will become a lot easier. They are also a lot more friendly to travel with on your winter surf holiday.

These are the most usable of all the templates, and great to have with you if the waves are small or lack power.

No 5. The Performance Shortboard:

The pinnacle of surfing for a lot of people. Surfing in critical sections, barrels and airs is what is achievable on the right surfboard. These are normally part of a quiver of surfboards that only come out when the waves are pumping.

Narrow noses and tails, lower volumes are the characteristics of the performance shortboards. If you are a travelling surfer or are looking to score good waves on your surf holiday you will have/need one of the in your board bag.
