Organized by Britain’s Higher Education governing body, this year’s BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) saw 360 surfing students compete at Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall last weekend. Garth, Moliets-veteran and all-time legend, was there for some pretty slimy tarp sliding action, some paddles and heaps of fun!

Situated on the North Atlantic coast of Cornwall, Fistral is very special place for me as. Here in Newquay, I first learned to surf and I’ve been coming back year after year with the rowdy Sheffield Hallam surf society, represent! All the way from an obnoxious fresher to an enthusiastic, dressing gown-wearing graduate. This weekend is all about surfing, hanging out, catching up with old friends, making new ones and just having an epic time! As you guys can imagine, also in 2015, it was eagerly anticipated and, once again, didn’t disappoint:

The BUCS weekend always has a unique feel to it; people simply seem determined to have a great time and enjoy themselves. This year, this was proved convincingly as the Atlantic Ocean really didn’t deliver or provide those day dream-inspiring, pumping waves. Double over ankle was all – all weekend long! Real credits must be paid to the event organizers who had a pretty tough time making the comp run at all, and, of course, to all the surfing legend defying both weather and waves! But BUCS wouldn’t be BUCS if 2 ft. waves could dampen our students’ and contestants’ surfing spirits. No way! We improvise like any good thrill-seeking people do. Plymouth University Surf Club bought a tarpaulin which was swiftly converted into a slip and slide, which after a good dose of water and washing up liquid provided an awesome drop in! It was also awesome to see so many familiar faces from over the summer, and we pretty much picked up where we left off, by partying in the notorious sailor’s nightclub. Two really incredible nights put on by Mr. Jam and Futuristic Polar Bears, weird name, good crowd-pleasers.

It was very encouraging to see so many university surf clubs, and all of us here at Star Surf look forward to hosting you again soon in sunny Moliets and Carcans, France or on dreamy Fuerteventura – and, of course, of seeing you at BUCS again next year!
