Braving the Weather at Croyde Bay, Devon

2015 British Surf Nationals

Once again, British surfers braved the weather and showed their determination to enjoy themselves despite conditions being anything but favourable last weekend in Croyde, Devon. It was pouring down with rain and winds were hurricane like! Still, this did not deter people from competing for a British championship title. The first day of the surf comp was incredibly tough with strong onshore winds providing very messy conditions. But credit to the competitors, some as young as 12, who bore the conditions stoically!

Thanks to Surfing GB and their impressive pop-up infrastructure – including a huge converted bus with indoors play-stations – everyone’s morale was boosted in less than dreamlike conditions. On top of that, a two-week surf holiday in one of Star Surf’s surf camps in more sunny European locations was up for grabs which made for suitable encouragement.

Day two of the surf comp was considerably more pleasant. Wave conditions were far more enjoyable with 3ft off shore waves you can only day-dream about. Simply ideal! There’s some epic drone footage from that day that even BBC news borrowed! Our very own Sami Khalaf, co-founder of Star Surf Camps, got involved with the competition. We promised not to mention that he was slightly miffed about being classified as a senior. Sorry, mate. Sneaky barrel though, epic!

From the top of the Croyde cliff, the high level of surfing standard provided some great spectating and, by the end of the day, champions were crowned: Luke Dillon won the men’s open, earning himself a two-week surf holiday in Moliets, France with us, Star Surf! Congratulations Luke, you deserve it!

All in all, it was a tremendously successful weekend and, once again, it was great to be involved and help out alongside Surfing GB. Also a big THANK YOU for all the free food and sponsored free beer! It’s so very encouraging to see the English surfing community picking up interest from such young members. Well done and see you next time!
