for your 2018 Summer Surfing Holidays

What to bring to your
2018 Surf Camp Holidays

Going on holiday can sometimes be stressful. Especially the packing part. Especially when leaving it to the last minute. We’ve all been there. How many spare tops should I bring? Are six pairs of shorts too many for a one-week surf holiday? I’m certainly going to need two pairs of trainers and 4 pairs of flip flops, right?

If you’re going away, probably somewhere new, it’s nice to bring some home comforts. We get it. It’s also nice to get excited about going away and the adventure ahead. To start your surfing holidays prepared and to get you excited about your surf camp week ahead, we’ve had a little snoop around our surf camps in Moliets, France and Santander, Spain, and put together this list of essential surf camp trends that will make packing your surf holiday bags fun!

1. Hats

Hats are both practical and fashionable while on surfing holidays this summer! With temperatures in the high 20 across Europe, summer is certainly here and in full swing. A summer hat is the greatest and most practical accessory for your surf camp stay. Shielding yourself from the summer elements makes sense while also adding a care-free look to every outfit. Our surf camp team is sporting a cap option. Thumbs up from us!

2. Sunnies

Everything goes this surfing holiday season when it comes to sunglasses: metal trends, gold or silver, round vintage, d-frame, oversized aviators, heavy browline, square wayfarer, flat-brow fashion, navigator, retro, classic cool clubmasters or tortoise shell & horn-rimmed. Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory, but their most important job is to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. One common effect caused by too much UV exposure is Cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s lens that can blur your vision. So, protect your eyes!

3. Hair

Let it grow, let it flow, let it show! A surfer ‘haircut’ simply doesn’t exist. Traditionally, we like it long, thick and naturally bleached from high exposure to the sun and salt water of the sea. So, this surf holiday season, it’s all about the natural surf camp look. Whether it’s long, short, straight or curly, make sure your hair reflects who you are. Easy!

4. Tops for HIM

The floral shirt was, is and forever will remain the centrepiece of the surf style. But there’s more to the surf look than Hawaii prints. Lightweight T-shirts, simple or with surfing motifs, white or bright colored, V-neck or plain, all say carefree spirit. Our surf camp teams love this look! And if all goes pear-shaped, you can, of course, always go shirtless.

5. Tops for HER

Wearing a bikini top instead of a shirt may seem unconventional at first, but with the right shorts and a loose button shirt that reveals just about enough, it’s a fashion statement that will never grow old. Prints, flowers, neon accents, bright colours, stripes and V-neck T-shirts are quintessential elements of the surfcore style. And, of course, bikini tops not only keep your surf holiday travel bag light, but double up as the perfect Yoga outfit!

6. Bottoms for HIM

Board shorts have come a long way these past decades. What began as plain and simple swim trunks has evolved into an industry that stretched far beyond the beach and all the way to big landlocked cities. Today, they are not only practical they are stylish as well. And, in the event of a board short shortage, our surf camp team is great at improvising!

7. Bottoms for HER

Surfer girl style is all about looking comfortable, breezy and carefree, all with a sporty edge. More so than the usual board shorts and jogger shorts, denim shorts are a surf fashion staple. You can either make your own from an old pair of jeans or you can buy them ready-made. High-waisted, low-waisted, embroidered, fringed, patched or distressed, you can’t go wrong with a pair of denim shorts.

8. Footwear

Have you ever seen surfers wearing sneakers on the beach? Well, they might wear boots in cold-water surfing spots, but as far as sun-drenched beaches and summer surf camps are concerned, flip-flops and sandals are the way to go. Dudes and chicks can easily pull off the surfer look with a nice pair of sandals or flip-flops. The brighter and more colourful the footwear, the better. Although you’ll probably end up going barefoot.

9. Attitude

Surf style has become a fashion statement that goes beyond surfing itself. It is about freedom and breaking the norms, being comfortable in your own shoes and not giving a hoot about what society thinks. Say ‘surfer’ and everyone thinks about a bronzed chap with perfect curls on a sun-drenched beach, surfboard under one arm, wearing a pair of cool board shorts and waiting for the perfect wave. Say ‘surfer girl’ and you’ll picture a blonde-haired beauty with an enviable tan wearing denim shorts and a bikini top.

You will find very few such stereotypical individuals here at Star Surf Camps. All our surf instructors, surf camp staff and office team come from all walk of life – we’ve got everything from University lecturers and engineers to florists and chemists. We’re proud to be an international team of individuals who share the same passion for surfing, our environment and a positive attitude to life more generally. In fact, chances are you are dressing like a surfer and not even know it. Be yourself, it’s as easy as that.

10. Tan
