Sea air and seawater are said to have a healing effect. The stimulating climate is not only good for our respiratory tract. So, let’s go to the sea!
The stimulating climate and salty air by the sea are good for our soul, our lungs and our bronchial tubes in equal measure. A dip in the sea is also easy on the joints. In this article, we reveal a few important facts about the healing power of the oceans and why salt water and sea salt are so good for us.
Off to the sea: health for body and mind
Whether it’s the Dead Sea, the Atlantic, the North Sea or the Baltic Sea – most people feel great in the water and seawater. It’s not for nothing that we regularly spend our holidays on the beach. A walk with a view of the water can work wonders. The sound of the sea relaxes us, dispels stress and worries and lifts our spirits. But the sea air and seawater are not only good for the psyche, but also for our airways and lungs. The aerosols also have a liberating effect on the larynx and paranasal sinuses. The sounds of the sea are also said to help tinnitus sufferers, as the sound of the coast distracts from the annoying ringing in the ears. Even the Greek philosopher Plato was certain: “The sea washes away all our ailments.”
Stimulating climate good for the respiratory tract, immune system and health
Salty air, cool wind, sun, clear water and high humidity. Doctors recommend the beneficial stimulating climate on the coast, and not just for the lungs. The combination of strong winds, temperature fluctuations, salty air and UV light really challenge our immune system. The weather at the seaside is said to stimulate the metabolism, cleanse the lungs and windpipe and strengthen the immune system. Wind, waves and surf ensure that the sea sprays the finest droplets (aerosols) with the air. Anyone walking on the beach breathes in the salty droplets. The air is particularly salty if you are standing right next to the surf. The aerosols enter the nasopharynx, the windpipe and the deeper respiratory tract. The salt is also deposited on the skin and can trigger a positive immune response. The stimulating climate on the East Frisian North Sea is particularly suitable for people with psoriasis or neurodermatitis. The gentle, stimulating climate of the Baltic Sea is particularly beneficial for high blood pressure.
What is contained in sea air and seawater?
Salt water contains some special substances that are good for our health and the upper and lower respiratory tract:
- → Salt
- → Iodine
- → Potassium
- → Magnesium
- → Calcium
- → Sulphate
Sea air clears the lungs, airways and bronchial tubes
The moist, cool and salty air by the sea has a positive effect on respiratory diseases. It promotes blood circulation, for example in the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. This makes them more resistant to germs and infections. Salt also loosens the mucus in the airways and makes it easier to cough up. This allows you to breathe more easily again.
If this isn’t reason enough to hop on a plane or bus or your van and get some well-deserved and healing sea time, we don’t know what!
