The weather is actually very consistent in France in late summer/early autumn. The average temperature for the Southwest of France is 20 degrees with your average high being at 24 degrees and the average low at 14 degrees.

What this means in English is that it’s warm in the day and you pop on a cozy jumper or comfy hoodie at night to stay warm. The average per day is a whopping 6 hours of sunshine, so in an average week with us in September you have more than 40 hours of glorious sunshine baking you. What’s more surprising is that only 12 days a month has rainfall and, to be honest, seeing a September stormy rainfall and some lightning one night a week is an incredible experience. The best statistic of all is the water is actually just as warm as August with a pleasant average of 20 degrees.

September is THE best surf season in France. If you ask many surf instructors why they like to teach in France, they will probably tell you that, come September, they are likely to be getting some of the best waves that break over beaches in the world.

What makes September and October so good for surfing you ask? Well, it’s a few key factors: The weather and water temperature as mentioned are big ones, but also the combination of much lighter winds and extremely consistent swells which come from hurricanes produced off the east coast of America that have plenty of time to ‘clean up’ as the swells produced travel across the Atlantic before peeling across the beaches, point breaks and reefs across Europe. Interested in the creation of waves? With the peak of the summer crowds being in the middle of August, you will be surprised to see how quickly the crowds disappear. This is great for so many reasons. You don’t have to worry so much about other surfers getting in your way and you have much more freedom to learn with plenty of space allowing you to focus on your surf lessons and progress quicker. You can also surf the better banks and breaks that are usually too crowded unless you’re at an advanced level. 

The atmosphere in the surf camp is like no other at this time of year. After what is usually a very busy peak season both the seasonaires and locals relax a lot. The weather is still great and waves, of course, even better. Most people are not in a rush and have a good few months to enjoy nature and the beautiful surroundings.

Think of it like the last day at school or university where all the exams are done and everyone is looking forward to the summer holidays, just vibing. There are still great live music events, parties and small festivals and of course the sight of the beautiful forests showing off the autumn colours!
