Surf House Sri Lanka

Created to Improve your Surfing

Our surf house is located on the beach of Ahangama Town, opposite one of the most consistent waves on the Southwest Coast, tucked just 50m into the jungle.

The surf house has been created to cater to our world class surf coaching programme, with a spacious surfboard lockup, a large selection of brand new surfboards, a dedicated video analysis and feedback room and a covered roof terrace for surf specific yoga and drills.

The communal areas include a large dining space, garden and rooftop terrace. Up here we serve our surf house guests a range of drinks and snacks throughout the day. We also offer quieter work spaces that allow you to stay connected whilst travelling in Sri Lanka.

Things to Do In & Around the Surf Camp

A typical surf holiday day here in Sri Lanka starts with a surf at daybreak followed by a healthy breakfast. We head out for our surf lessons in the mornings between 9 and 11am, and get together for a post surf lesson snack before a theory surf or video analysis session. The afternoons are free for you to relax around the surf house or go on an excursion away from the surf camp. Yoga is held in the afternoons before more surf lessons or video analysis. We show surf clips every evening on the projector before dinner is served around 7pm.

If you’d like to explore the South of Sri Lanka, you can do so in many ways. We encourage all our surf holiday guests to immerse themselves in this beautiful culture and its lifestyle.

Sri Lanka Transfers

Travelling from Colombo

Travelling in a foreign country can be quite the adventure in itself. This is very true for an island like Sri Lanka where the rules and modes of Western transportation don’t always apply. The closest airport to our surf camp in Sri Lanka is Colombo, also known as Bandaranaike and Katunayake airport.

Our Airport Transfers

We can organise a taxi to collect you from the airport and take you to the Surf House (this takes 2.5-3 hours). Taxis from Colombo for 6 people average at around £120/140€; smaller cars for up to 4 people/ 2 people and 2 surfboard bags are around £80/95€ (one way). If you wish to book a transfer, we need your flight arrival and departure times, flight numbers for return flights, arrival and departure airport and number of surfboard bags.

Making Your Own Way to the Surf House

Many of our surf holiday guests in Sri Lanka like to make their own way to the surf camp. Our surf house is located in Ahangama, close to Sri Lanka’s southernmost tip and about 135 km from Colombo International Airport. Travelling from Colombo, busses, trains and tuk tuks – or a combination of the three – will get you to our surf house in about 4 to 4.5 hours at a varying cost of between 15€ and 55€.

What to Bring on your Surf Holidays to Sri Lanka

Before arriving in Sri Lanka, here are a few things we found helpful when travelling around the island:

Your Passport | Should be valid for more than 6 months from your booked date of arrival. We recommend you bring a photocopy of it just in case.

Visa | You need a visa for your surf holiday in Sri Lanka. For EU members (not UK), this is issued upon arrival and costs US $35. Visas can be obtained via the Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This website also provides a list of countries applicable for the ETA fee waiver program.

Travel Insurance | We would always recommend travel insurance to our surf holiday guests. You will be covered under our insurance during surf lessons. However, when you are free surfing, for example, and you damage somebody else’s surf equipment, you are liable for the repair costs. If you’re looking for a travel insurer, contact our team.

International Driving Licence | If you want to hire a car, rent a bike or drive a tuk tuk yourself.

Spending Money | As much or as little as you see fit. Must be enough to cover two dinners out.

Clothes | Swim- & beachwear, sunscreen and hat, beach towels, rain jacket

Other Useful Items | Travel Adapter, Toiletries & Mosquito Repellent

Tropical Water Surf Wax |  … Is hard to come by, so we recommend you bring your own. The water temperature is around 27 degrees. Local Sri Lankan surf wax is like rubber and good tropical surf wax is hard to find on the island.

Rash Vests & Board Shorts | … Can be found in some places, but not many. Best to bring a couple with long and short sleeves, go for UV +50 fabric. You can leave your wet suit at home!

    Currency

The exchange rate can be a bit confusing at first, so it’s good to have an idea of the quantity you’d like to get in advance:
    - £1 gdp = around 224 Sri Lankan Rupee
    - £50 = around 11,200 Sri Lankan Rupee
Another useful way to carry money is using a currency card, which you can top up online. A credit card is also useful in case of emergencies.

    Visa Information

If you are travelling on a U.K. passport, you will have to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) in order to enter Sri Lanka, please see this website for more information www.eta.gov.lk.
If you are travelling from outside the U.K. then please check with your own embassy for the latest visa information. We recommend that you book your return ticket before arriving in Sri Lanka. To book in advance and for more information, visit: www.eta.gov.lk.

    Travel Insurance

  • +

    Weather

We’ve got great swells all year round on Sri Lanka’s South coast. The best months for a surf holiday in terms of weather are October through April when our days are filled with sunshine and the surf is generally offshore! May through September are still warm, but get the occasional rain showers that bring rougher conditions with them.

  • +

    Personal Surf Equipment

You are welcome to bring your own surf gear. We have plenty of space in our surf camp to store it during your surf holidays. Simply let us know before your arrival, so we can arrange for a big enough car for your airport transfer.
