Surf Holidays in Portugal

Welcome to the beautiful Algarve

A typical day in our Portugal surf camp starts with a beautiful sunrise and a nutritious breakfast before you join your surf instructor for the morning surf briefing. Equipment will be ready, surfboards and lunches packed. All you need to do is grab your wetsuit, some sunscreen and we head down to the waves!

Our surf instructors will take you to the day’s best location based on wave conditions and your surf level. For you to make the most of your surf holidays, we keep surf lesson group sizes small with a 1:3 coach-to-student ratio. Enjoy your surf lessons and boost your skills with surf theory on the beach and practice in the water. We’ll catch your progress on film to analyse back at the lodge during our video coaching sessions.

Your afternoons are spent with some well-deserved relaxation time by the pool, in the Jacuzzi or during an energising yoga session. Over sunset, enjoy an aperitif before our in-house chef serves up a delicious 3-course dinner and we get together for a few drinks at the bar and fire.

Personalized Surf Coaching

Small Surf Lesson Sizes & Video Analysis for Best Results

Included in each of our surf holiday packages are five carefully structured days surfing with our ISA level 2 coaches based on your individual surfing goals. You will be assigned your own surf coach for the week, teaching in a 1 to 3 coach-to-student ratio. In our daily video coaching/ surf theory sessions, we analyze your surfing technique to help you improve more effectively and reach your goals more quickly.

For you to improve your surfing as quickly as possible on your surf holidays and for us to be able to teach you as best as we can, we divide all our surf holiday guests into levels of surfing ability.

If this will be your first time surfing, Level 1 is right for you. Our highly-experienced team will guide you through the first stages, getting you standing on the surfboard and teaching you vital information about handling yourself in the water. We aim to get you to beaches with small, manageable waves, gradually building your confidence throughout your surf holiday week.

If you’ve surfed a few times before, you certainly have the basics down. Now you want to improve your pop-up and get into the green waves. Level 2 provides the surf coaching you need to get ‘out back’. You’ll learn essential surf etiquette and advice for safety in the water, all the while honing your surf skills towards an intermediate level.

Level 3 is our intensive, intermediate course, the ‘Green Wave Riders’. If you’ve already got your confidence up and are happy in green waves, but you want to perfect your pop-ups, get to grips with a few turns and cutbacks, and generally catch more waves on your sessions, this is the course for you. We will train you to choose safe places to surf, forecast the conditions and feel comfortable going out on your own as an independent surfer.

And, if you’re confident ‘out back’, have a great pop-up, and some basic cut backs and turns, then Level 4 is for you. Now you’re looking to advance your surf skills. This course trains you in improving turns, duck diving, positioning, speed, control, cutbacks and a variety of other techniques. Video coaching throughout the week from our advanced coaches means you can monitor your progress, seeing exactly how and where you need to improve. Getting to the best waves of the day is essential for this course. Whether that’s a 6am dawnie or a sunset session, our surf coaches will get you to the right beach at the right time to take advantage of the best waves.

If you’re still not sure which surfing level you’re at, get in touch before bookings your surfing holidays and our team will help you figure it out.

Surf Coaching & Conditions

Our Local Experts on the Hunt for Waves

All our friendly and supportive surf instructors are ISA (International Surfing Association) level 2 qualified or hold equivalent experience and training. This includes industry standard lifeguarding qualifications, so you’ll be as safe as possible in the water with us. Our surf instructors are trained to teach anyone from first-timers to advanced level surfers and our surf courses are based around tried and tested coaching techniques that get results.

We can’t always promise perfect waves but we can almost guarantee there’ll be a wave to surf somewhere every day of your surf holiday, something many surf destinations across Europe can’t boast. Here in the Southwest of Portugal, we have swell hitting from the Atlantic Ocean on the West coast and The Gulf of Cádiz on the South coast. These waves teamed with our instructors’ local knowledge of the area’s many beaches mean we’re experts in taking advantage of pretty much any swell direction.

Lodge Location & Facilities

Idyllic Setting along Rugged Coastlines

Our surf lodge location has been carefully chosen to take advantage of two of Portugal’s best surfing coastlines, the South and the Southwest. Spanning 744 km², Portugal’s southwestern National Park boasts idyllic countryside, unspoiled beaches and some of the cleanest water in Europe. We’re a 5-minute drive from the nearest town, Lagos. Here you can find plenty of restaurants and lashings of culture amidst art-lined streets. Be sure to try the local dishes of sardines or Cataplana (fish stew) and, of course, a Pastel de Nata with every coffee!

Our surf lodge is set within peaceful countryside. It’s large gardens are home to an outdoor pool, dining area, bar, lounge area with fire pit, our yoga space, the surfboard and wetsuit areas and an orange orchard with plenty of hammocks. Depending on the time of year you may be able to pick your own lemons, avocados, oranges, clementines, pears, limes and even almonds! Inside our sirf lodge, you find our games room, breakfast area, lounge and reception area where you can request any additional bookings or equipment rental during your surf holiday stay with us.

Yoga & Relaxation

Peaceful & Serene Surroundings

Nestled between the orange trees, our dedicated outdoor yoga space is perfectly located for peaceful sessions at our surf lodge in the serene countryside of the Algarve’s idyllic South coast. Away from the hustle and bustle yet still close to the nearest town, we’re perfectly located for quick access to the stunning beaches of the south and west coastlines, well-known for their prime surfing spots.

Two surf-inspired Yoga sessions are included in all our surf holidays packages here in Portugal. If you wish to practise more Yoga, choose our Yoga Upgrade which gets you a total of six carefully planned surf-focused yoga sessions during your surf holidays guaranteed to restore, refresh and re-energise your body before the next days surfing. Our Yoga Upgrade is perfect if you’re either relatively new to Yoga or have a current practice you wish to continue with a high quality YOga instructor.

In addition to the above, we invite you to take advantage of some additional pampering with a massage from one of our recommended massage practitioners or a complete spa day. Massages can take place in our lodge or a within a trip to the stunning Monchique spar. Whether you need to ease out stubborn knots, love to be pampered, or simply need that extra relaxation to refresh from a busy work life.

Surf Lodge Cuisine

Local Produce prepared by our Surf Lodge Chef

Our professional in-house chef prepares home cooked food predominantly from fresh local produce. His delicious meals cover breakfast, surf lunches and two-course dinners in the evenings. All  diets can be catered for with prior arrangement through our bookings team. When you need to unwind, we also have our outdoor bar open in the evening with snacks and drinks.

Mornings at the surf lodge in Portugal start with a healthy breakfast of fresh seasonal fruits, homemade bircher muesli and yoghurt as well as freshly baked bread with a selection of toppings and spreads. You can also make your own vegan oat pancakes and waffles.

We prepare and pack beach picnics for you on surf days. On “Lay Days”, there’s a selection of lunches available at the surf lodge. From toasties and sandwiches to salads and fresh fruit to crisps and biscuits.

Our two-course dinners include Tuna steak with salsa verde, goat cheese salads, Moroccan chicken tagine, crumbles with ice cream and chocolate fondue with fresh fruit.

Things to Do

Exploring the beautiful Algarve

On Wednesdays and Saturdays we take a break from surfing which gives you the opportunity to explore the area around the surf camp. Below are a few of our favourite things we wouldn’t want you to miss out on.

Exploring Lagos Town

Lagos is known for its walled old town, cliffs and Atlantic beaches. Steep wooden steps lead to the sandy cove of Praia do Camilo. The nearby cliffs of Ponta de Piedade offer sweeping headland views and a lighthouse. Igreja de Santo António, an ornate 18th-century church, sits across from the Castelo dos Governadores, a castle with a baroque facade and watchtowers.

Sagres | Journey to the End of the World

..Or rather, the end of Portugal! Sagres is at the extreme western tip of the Algarve and is like no other destination in southern Portugal. The dramatic landscapes are dominated by nature’s raw power; from the raging seas that carve immense cliffs, the bracing winds that create barren landscapes, through to the intense summer sun, which burns careless tourists.

Sagres is primarily a surfing destination, but there are sheltered pristine beaches for relaxing on and an unassuming cool vibe about the town. Day-trippers are drawn to Sagres by the Cabo de Sao Vicente, a remote and bleak headland, aptly fitting for the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe.

Três Irmaos

Praia dos Três Irmãos is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area of Portimão. It is famous for its stunning rock formations and the many hidden caves that can be explored. The sunset from this beach is gorgeous as well. We recommend a walk along the coast or to hire an SUP!

Hike in the Mountains of Monchique

Monchique is the ideal nature holiday destination. This magnificent town and its surrounding area are one of the most peaceful places in the Algarve. The mountains offer remarkable views and plenty of walks for all hiking abilities.

A Wine Tour in Alantejo

Get a taste of Portugal. Some of Portugal’s most famous wines are made in the Alentejo like Cortes de Cima, Herdade dos Coelheiros, Mouchão and the pioneering Esporão.

Airport Transfers

We offer airport shuttles to and from Faro International Airport FAO located 4 km to the west of Faro in Portugal.

  • Private Car (up to 4 people): 88€
  • Private Minibus (Up to 8 people incl. surf board bags): 96€
